Identity Crisis

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to speak at Cross Point. What God laid on my heart to talk about was a message that He has been teaching me for the past 4 years. I have struggled with identity my entire life…and my heart’s desire is to find my identity in God, and not other things. Here are my message notes:

A LIE believed as though it were truth, carries the POWER OF TRUTH in our lives.

Lies that we find our identity in:

Lie #1 – Who I am is how I look. The problem with this lie is that we’re looking at a broken image. We spend more time cultivating an outward appearance than we do cultivating a heart for God.
Lie #2 – Who I am is what I accomplish. We settle for a false definition of value, significance and purpose.
Lie #3 – Who I am is found in my marital status. We live every day feeling incomplete.
Lie #4 – Who I am is who I’m related to.

Your earthly VALUE was determined through God’s work in CREATION.

Your heavenly VALUE was determined through Christ’s work on the CROSS.

    Hi Justin and Trisha ~ I was able to listen to your message (Justin) yesterday and I definitely needed to hear what you preached about. I used to believe lie #3… I am so thankful for taking God's word and hiding it in my heart b/c that has helped me learn that my identity is in Christ alone. Psalm 139 is the one chapter in the Bible that I make myself read over and over again.

    Thank you for bringing the Word to us yesterday. One thing I struggled with in my identity is "I am how I am treated", your message is helping me get free of that. Thanks brother!

    Im going to have to watch this over and over because I believe it has so many great nuggets that can help me. I really appreciate your honesty and purity as you taught. For me, my greatest struggle is the lie that who I am is determined by the opinion of others about me. I know that wasnt one of the lies you listed, but this message still spoke volumes to me.
    The scripture is Genesis is especially special to me right now as I read it Saturday night, heard it yesterday in the message at the church I attended, and Im now hearing it in your message. I love that God is speaking LOUDLY to me : ) God bless!

    Thanks so much for following God's leading on this message! I have shared the video with other ladies that I am in community with through Celebrate Recovery ministry at our church.
    At different times I have struggled with all of them. Relying on my identity in Christ is one of my goals for this year.
