Finding Common Ground
Trisha and I are so excited to tell you about the opportunity we have to speak later this month at Common Ground Christian Church in Tampa, Florida. They are in a series called “God, Love, Sex” and we will be sharing our story with the church on Sunday, February 28th.
(If you’d like us to partner with you and your church, you can click here for more info)The opportunity to share our story with the church is a story, in itself, of redemption in some ways. The founding and senior pastor of the church, Danny Schaffner and I went to college together. We never really got along. We didn’t argue or hate each other…we just weren’t friends. I am not sure why, other than I was a pretty big jerk. Danny has a tremendous teaching gift, and I was jealous and envious of the the opportunities God was blessing him with to speak. Jealousy and envy never built too many strong friendships.
About a year ago, Danny and I had a chance to talk on the phone, and he opened the conversation by telling me how proud he was of Trisha and me for the hard work we allowed God to do in our marriage. It totally humbled me, and I just told him how sorry I was for being so proud and arrogant and resentful. It is amazing how much God can move in our hearts when we are willing to own our junk and admit it and ask forgiveness…even when that junk is 15 years old. Danny told me he forgave me, and he’d love to have us down to Tampa to share our story.
It is a true honor to partner with Common Ground this month and help share God’s story of redemption. It will be told with words and without words as we serve the people of Common Ground together.
If you live in Tampa, you should check out Common Ground. The vision they have to change a multi-cultural, multi-generational community in Tampa is inspiring.
Maybe today, you have relational distance with someone in your life. Maybe a friend you haven’t talked to for years. Maybe someone who you’ve hurt or that has hurt you. Is it possible for you to pick up the phone or send an email and just say I’m sorry?
Who do you need to find common ground with today?

This is something I've worked on over the last few years and ironically Facebook has helped a lot with it. I've been able to contact people who I've wronged in the past and apologize to them when I had no idea how to contact them any other way.
can't wait to hear your story in person! we'll see you on the 28th!
