My Character Vs. My Calendar

I had the opportunity yesterday to continue our Chronicles series at Cross Point. We have been talking about the parables of Jesus. Yesterday, I taught on the parable of the mustard seed. The big idea of this parable is that God’s Kingdom may seem small and insignificant, but through Christ, it will have a tremendous impact. God has given us each “mustard seed moments” and so often we miss them because of impatience.

There have been so many times in my life that I have been frustrated with God. I’ve been disappointed that he didn’t show up in timeframe I thought he should.  The truth is that God doesn’t do a very good job of operating on my schedule. I am not, by nature a very patient person. Because I am not patient I have missed countless opportunities to make an impact with my life for the Kingdom.

More often than not, I have been disappointed in my relationship with God because I have equated my calendar with God’s timing. I have missed mustard seed moments in my life because I have expected God’s timing to be my timing…and when it doesn’t play out that way, I lose hope.

Can I share with you today what I am learning? God is more concerned with your character than he is your calendar. God will often allow a dream, allow a passion, allow an opportunity to marinate in your heart until you have developed the character necessary to see that dream or that opportunity come to fruition.

The problem is we aren’t patient. If we’re honest we care more about our calendar than we do our character. We want results. We want growth. We want impact. So we often shortcut the character development process so we can have or achieve what we feel we deserve.

Looking back over the last 15 years of my life and ministry, I see so many times I compromised my character to accommodate my calendar. When this happens in your life or in mine, what we end up with is a false sense of God’s blessing.

Maybe there is an area of your life today that God is asking you to wait…to be patient. Maybe its in your marriage…maybe its with one of your kids…maybe its in your dating relationships…maybe in your finances…maybe its with your job. Maybe today God is asking you to view your character as more important than your calendar…to be patient and allow him to bring about the growth in your heart and life you desperately need.

What area of your life do you sense God asking you to be patient?

Would it be possible to say "all" in answer to to your question? I hope so 'cause that's pretty much how I feel! :)

Great sermon yesterday. Really worked me over. Again. You have a bad tendency to do that. ;)

man, justin. . .what an awesome post. you cannot possibly imagine how much i needed to hear/read that today. . .

. . .right now the Lord is asking me to wait patiently for my ex-fiance. he is struggling right now with some nasty sin and in his relationship with Christ. in the midst of the struggle, he broke off our engagement despite the fact that it was crystal clear to both of us before getting engaged that getting married was the Lord's will. . .

. . .my calendar is saying "c'mon, Lord. . .enough time has passed already, i have been patient enough, i am ready for him to come back now!!" yet i hear the Lord saying, "i am not done refining his or your character yet. . ." ouch! i am allowing the Lord to shape and mold my character while walking through the Refiner's fire and pray that my ex-fiance is allowing that same de-drossing process. . .i am trying to be patient and asking the Lord to step in and help me be patient. . .

I think in my case "What area of my life ISN'T God asking me to be patient?" would be the more appropriate question. I'm also an impatient person. There is a big 3 year old temper tantrum wanting to be released where I stamp my foot and cry and say, "God, I am sick of all this pain and suffering and waiting!! It's my turn! Mine Mine Mine!" But if I've learned anything by watching my siblings handle my nephews, that is definitely not the way to go about getting what you want.

Right now God is wanting me to be patient with my career, my finances, my family, my love life, my health, and even my faith. Your sermon was awesome yesterday because while I feel like my walk with Christ has come leaps and bounds, there's still a feeling like I am insignificant in God's plan. My mind was in a million places because it also touched on so many things in one way or another. Interesting how powerful one of the shortest parables can be.

Waiting! Huh! A couple of years ago I heard a pastor say "waiting is biblical". Didn't know what to do with it or it had to do with me? Didn't give any attention to it. Until He made me wait. Than I found out He is the one who should be in control and not me. I've waited. God knows. And still am. I don't know if we ever will stop waiting. Hasn't that got to do with the molding in us? I also think we have to be grateful with what we have NOW. Because if He would move at the time when we want there is always something else we think He should do and in the time we think He should. We are alway in demand. I don't think it's wrong to ask but right after that we should be grateful. I think it's in Phil 4 somewhere. That is why John Waller's song "I'm still waiting" was my song last Summer. And every time I hear it it encourages me. Thanks for challenge and encouragement.
